Day 257 - Spring Migration

Yesterday was International Migratory Bird Day (nerd alert) so I probably should have taken these photos then but as my followers know, I sequestered myself at the library to get work done.  I did the same thing today but by late afternoon, I was desperate for some fresh air so I headed down to the public boat launch area in Everett.

I found this large group of Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia) hanging out in the parking lot facing into the wind.  They are the largest tern in the world and are summer residents in many places in Washington state.  They migrate back here in the spring from as close as California and as far south as Colombia and Venezuela.  The birds have a very distinctive scratchy call, much like a heron, and I often hear flocks flying over my house at night.

I think they have a slight "clown-like" appearance

somebody's been tracking the guy on the left - notice the different bands on his legs?
