The first Saturday in May has significance for me for two reasons: Opening Day and the Kentucky Derby. I was a rower for many years and actually got to row in Opening Day back in the 80's. It is still one of my favorite rowing memories because of the venue. Most often, rowing races are held on lakes or water where the race course is too far away to truly hear people cheering for you. When you enter that Montlake Cut, the noise is like none you will ever hear anywhere else. It's as if you are in a huge football stadium and it makes you row harder than you've ever rowed before.

Growing up, we always watched the Triple Crown races as a family and my dad took us to the occasional harness race at a track not far from our home. We didn't own horses although my sister has owned some for at least 25 years now. They are amazing animals to watch and my sister, brother-in-law and I have attended two Breeder's Cup races in recent years, one of which was held at Churchill Downs. The Derby has been on my bucket list for quite some time and I know I will get there. If I were attending today, I would probably be wearing one of these hats which I pull out on certain festive occasions.
