Day 253 - Technology Pros and Cons

There are things about technology these days that make my job easier and more difficult.  Let me try and give you some examples of what I'm talking about.

PROS:  I LOVE having a set of netbooks in my classroom this year.  My students were able to create the following tables and graphs for their lab reports in very little time (approx. 15 minutes for some).  Not to mention the dramatic improvement in the quality of their work.  I also typically have 10-12 kids in class who are skilled at these tasks so they become my teaching assistants, helping others who are struggling.  This saves me so much time!

Before netbooks - it was a daily battle just getting some kids to use a ruler.

Before netbooks - a wrinkled piece of graph paper randomly taped into the lab report.

After netbooks - students helping students is awesome!

CONS:  With all the technology currently available, students spend a great deal of time texting, instant messaging, listening to their Ipods, gaming and surfing the internet.  This doesn't leave a great deal of time for good old fashioned homework and causes some students tune out if your lesson isn't loaded with media bells and whistles.  An example of this effect is shown below - it should be noted that this was even an open journal quiz!

My response to IDK (there was another on the back) - TBD or Too Bad Dude
