Day 239 - Northwest Smocking Arts Guild

The current "art" installment at my favorite espresso bar focuses on hand smocked clothing from the Northwest Smocking Arts Guild. When I was very young, my grandmother Dodie and my mum both created hand smocked clothing for me (and my sister Lee) so this was like a trip down memory lane. I used to watch with fascination as they completed the intricate stiches.  Why didn't I take the time to learn?

A number of these pieces had creative touches that picked up the colors and elements of the fabric.

the beads, ribbon and small flowers make this simple fabric special

this is very similar to items I might have worn as a child

love the cherries woven into the stitches

had no idea people did remarkable things like this - so special

my sister Lee wearing what is probably some of my grandmother's
handiwork and my apologies for the bad picture of a picture

my sister Lee and me (all clothing worn by my sister ultimately got handed down to me)

  2. Whoa...I had no idea what went into smocking! Very cool contrast with your pictures from days of yore and the exhibit photos.
