First "Lab"

Students had their first "lab" experience today as they progressed through a series of mini lab stations.  The intent of these stations is twofold:  1) to give them some idea of what lies ahead in the curriculum and 2) to give me some idea of what they already know and/or what misconceptions they have.

observing a very simple chemical reaction

Alka-Seltzer proved fascinating to 8th graders

trying to see if kids know about water displacement/volume

air contracts when cooled and . . .

air expands when heated

kids were on task for the most part

but I did catch these guys doing a little experiment of their own

and it did make me chuckle (hope their parents have a sense of humor
because these shots will be going into my presentation for Curriculum Night)
