What a scent this rose has! In recent years, I noticed a dramatic loss in my sense of smell. It finally frustrated me enough that I sought medical advice/tests. After sinus x-rays, an MRI, a visit to the ENT and finally, a neurologist, I may have an answer. . .although it is NOT an answer I am happy about. After asking lots of probing questions, the neurologist believes that a horrible fall at Mt. Rainier back in 2003 probably sheared off (his words, not mine) the nerves that pass through a section from my brain to my nasal sinus area. He told me it is a lot more common than you would think. Alas, this Sombreil climbing rose is one of the few things in my garden that I am still able to smell. May it never die.
